Synopsis
St-Canut, Laurentians. At dawn, in a muddy field on the edge of a dairy farm, a car lies on its side, its doors wide open… A stray animal sniffs at hors d’oeuvres meant for a cocktail party… Further away, two bodies lie on the frozen ground, a suburban woman and a farmer, both murdered.
Constance Forêt, 37, lead investigator at the regional office in Mascouche, is sent to the scene. But this double homicide is only the beginning of a deadly saga.
Divorced from a corrupt ex-cop, who still haunts her with his shady dealings, Constance juggles the demands of motherhood and her high-stakes job. With three kids and little time to spare, she’s lucky to have her sister and confidante, Zoé, who not only takes care of the children but also manages the family motel their alcoholic and unreliable father has neglected for years.
To solve this case, Constance must collaborate with major crimes investigators from Montreal, Antoine and his superior, Fred Bérubé, who leads the operation. She can also count on her dedicated partner, Jonas, and the help of a few pregnant officers stuck at the station, handling administrative work away from danger.
This crime series plunges us deep into the misty backcountry of the North Shore, where one shady scheme leads to another. At its heart are small-time crooks who’ve unwittingly stepped into a deadly trap. Among them: Mike Pratt, a window and door shop owner; his accountant, Marlène Charbonneau; her brother, Éric “La Bottine” Charbonneau; high-profile lawyer and art dealer, Anne Dupuis, and her lover, Sylvain Lauzon; and the ruthless psychopath, Joël Savard.
Slowly but surely, we’re drawn into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse between the police and the criminals, a game from which no one will emerge unscathed.
